A build (or deck archetype) in Slay the Spire 2 is a cohesive strategy built around a set of synergistic cards, relics, and resource management techniques. Rather than picking cards randomly, a build provides a blueprint: which cards to prioritize, which relics amplify the strategy, and how to pilot the deck through each Act.
Every character in Slay the Spire 2 supports multiple build archetypes. The Ironclad can stack Strength for massive single hits or build impenetrable Block walls. The Silent chooses between Poison attrition and Shiv aggression. Understanding build archetypes transforms your runs from random card selections into intentional, powerful strategies.
Builds aren't rigid prescriptions — they're flexible frameworks. The best players adapt their build based on card offerings, boss encounters, and relic finds. A Strength build that finds Dead Branch might pivot into Exhaust. A Poison build with extra Shiv cards becomes a hybrid. The archetypes below represent proven starting points; your job is to adapt them to each unique run.
Identify a build archetype based on early card offerings. If you're offered Inflame in Act 1, lean into Strength. If you find Noxious Fumes, commit to Poison. Let the game guide your choice.
Every build has 3-5 core cards that define the strategy. Prioritize these above all else. Skip "good" cards that don't contribute to your archetype — deck coherence beats raw card quality.
Relics multiply your build's effectiveness. Shuriken with Shivs, Dead Branch with Exhaust, Inserter with Orbs. Shop wisely — a single synergistic relic can be worth more than three good cards.
Every build needs Energy to function. Cards like Offering, Turbo, and Adrenaline solve Energy problems. A 5-cost turn is useless with only 3 Energy. Plan your curve — know what you can play each turn.
Adapt to what the game offers. If your planned build cards never appear, pivot to what's available. Flexibility wins more runs than stubbornness.
A 20-card deck draws key cards every fight. A 35-card deck may never see them. Skip mediocre cards — saying "no" is often the best choice.
The best damage build still needs Block cards to survive. Aim for roughly 60% archetype cards and 40% survivability. Dead players deal zero damage.
Upgrade your build's keystone cards first. An upgraded Demon Form, Barricade, or Noxious Fumes is worth more than upgrading five random cards.
Act 1 kills more runs than Act 3. Take defensive cards early even if they don't fit the final build — you can remove them later at shops.
Hallway fights test consistency; boss fights test scaling. Ensure your build has a win condition against high-HP enemies, not just fast hallway clears.
Starting Strikes and Defends dilute your draw. Remove them at shops and rest sites once you have superior replacements from your build archetype.
If a game-changing relic appears (Dead Branch, Snecko Eye), consider rebuilding around it. The best builds sometimes emerge from unexpected opportunities.
Meta-defining builds with the highest consistency and win rate. Work reliably at Ascension 10 and require minimal luck to assemble.
Excellent builds that reliably win runs. May need one key relic or card to fully come online, but very strong once assembled.
Solid builds that work in many situations. Viable at most Ascension levels but may struggle against specific bosses or in unlucky runs.
Niche builds that excel in specific situations but lack consistency. Fun to play and can win, but often outclassed by higher-tier options.
Excels at Strength scaling, Block stacking with Barricade, and Exhaust-based card engines. Beginner-friendly with the highest HP pool.
Masters Poison for passive scaling and Shiv generation for rapid-fire damage. The Sly discard mechanic adds a powerful resource layer.
Channels Lightning, Frost, and other Orbs amplified by Focus for consistent passive damage and defense. Engine-building at its finest.
Wields the dual Star/Energy resource system. Forge powers up Sovereign Blade, while Star Burst stockpiles for explosive finishers.
Summons Osty as a living shield and weapon, or applies Doom for inevitable kills. Souls fuel both archetypes. High skill ceiling.
