“An automaton eternally modifying itself to survive. Deploys Orb technology when it must fight.”
An ancient combat automaton that channels elemental Orbs — Lightning, Frost, Dark, Glass, and Plasma — for versatile strategies. Returns from StS1 with a familiar toolkit and is considered one of the most consistent characters.
Resource System: Standard Energy (3 per turn) plus Orb Slots (start with 3). Orbs act as persistent passive and active resources. Focus amplifies all orb effects.
Unlock: Play a run as the Necrobinder.
Best For: Players who enjoy mechanical depth and building engine-style decks that become unstoppable by Act 3.
The Defect is Slay the Spire 2's most mechanically unique character — a combat automaton that channels elemental Orbs as persistent passive and active resources. Unlike other characters who play cards and immediately resolve their effects, the Defect creates an ongoing engine of Orbs that generate value every single turn without requiring additional card plays. This persistent value generation makes the Defect one of the strongest scaling characters in the game, capable of creating near-impenetrable defense while dealing massive passive damage.
The Orb system works through two interconnected mechanics: passive effects and evoke effects.
Each channeled Orb sits in one of the Defect's Orb Slots (starting at 3, expandable through Capacitor). At the end of every turn, each Orb triggers its passive effect — Lightning deals a small amount of damage to a random enemy, Frost generates Block, Dark stores additional damage, Glass deals AoE damage, and Plasma generates Energy. When an Orb is evoked (either by channeling a new Orb into full slots, pushing the leftmost out, or through cards like Dual Cast), it triggers a stronger one-time active effect. Lightning evoke deals significant single-target damage, Frost evoke generates substantial Block, and Dark evoke unleashes all stored damage in a devastating burst.
Focus is the Defect's primary scaling stat and the single most important number to increase.
Focus directly amplifies every Orb's passive AND evoke effects by its value. With 0 Focus, a Lightning Orb passively deals 3 damage; with 5 Focus, it deals 8 damage. With 3 Frost Orbs and 10 Focus, you're generating 39 Block per turn passively — more than enough to survive anything. Defragment is the most important card in the Defect's kit because it permanently grants 1-2 Focus. Stacking Focus through multiple Defragments, Consume (sacrifice Orb slots for Focus), and Inserter turns your Orb engine from functional to unstoppable.
Glass Orbs are a new addition in Slay the Spire 2, dealing AoE damage to all enemies both passively and on evoke.
This addresses one of the Defect's weaknesses from the first game — difficulty handling multi-enemy encounters. Glass Orbs with high Focus tear through hallway fights with 3-4 enemies, dealing escalating AoE damage every turn. Combined with Electrodynamics (Lightning evokes hit ALL enemies), the Defect now has excellent multi-target options.
The Claw archetype offers a completely different playstyle that ignores Orbs entirely.
Claw is a 0-cost Attack that deals damage equal to the number of times any Claw has been played this combat. Each Claw played increases all future Claw damage by 2 permanently. With multiple copies and All For One (return all 0-cost cards from discard to hand), Claw creates a snowballing damage engine that grows exponentially each turn. This archetype is the Defect's 'fun' build — high variance, but incredibly satisfying when it works. Echo Form (play the first card each turn twice) can make either Orb or Claw builds devastating.
For an Orb build, stack Focus through Defragment and fill slots with Lightning or Frost. Capacitor gives up to 6 more Orb slots. Electrodynamics turns Lightning evokes into AoE. For a faster approach, ignore Orbs and grab Claw cards with Strength scaling — All For One lets you replay zero-cost attacks. Echo Form and Subroutine can make power card builds insane.
The Defect starts with 4 Strikes, 4 Defends, Zap, and Dualcast. Zap channels a Lightning Orb for 1 Energy, and Dualcast evokes your rightmost Orb twice. Cracked Core starts you with a Lightning Orb, meaning you deal passive damage from turn 1. Your early priority is finding Focus (Defragment) and Frost Orbs for defense, then building toward either a full Orb engine or a Claw strategy.
The Defect channels Orbs into slots that persist between turns. Each Orb provides a passive effect every turn and a stronger evoke effect when removed. Lightning Orbs deal 3+Focus damage to random enemies passively. Frost Orbs generate 2+Focus Block passively. Dark Orbs gain 6+Focus stored damage each turn. Glass Orbs deal 2+Focus AoE damage passively. Plasma Orbs generate 1 Energy passively. Managing which Orbs to channel, when to evoke, and how to order your slots is the core of Defect gameplay.
Focus is the Defect's equivalent of Strength, but better — it scales EVERY Orb simultaneously. Each point of Focus adds to every passive trigger and every evoke effect of every Orb. With 3 Orbs and 5 Focus, that's +15 total bonus value per turn across all passive effects. Defragment (+1-2 Focus permanent), Consume (remove 1 Orb slot, gain 2 Focus), and Biased Cognition (+4 Focus but lose 1 per turn) are the primary Focus sources.
Lightning Orbs are the Defect's primary offensive Orb type. Passive: deal 3+Focus damage to a random enemy each turn. Evoke: deal 8+Focus damage to a random enemy. With high Focus and multiple Lightning Orbs, enemies take massive unavoidable damage every turn. Electrodynamics makes Lightning evokes hit ALL enemies, turning them into AoE powerhouses. Tempest channels X Lightning Orbs where X = current Energy.
Frost Orbs are the Defect's signature defensive tool. Passive: generate 2+Focus Block each turn. Evoke: generate 5+Focus Block immediately. With 3 Frost Orbs and 10 Focus, you generate 36 Block per turn passively — more than most characters can produce by playing their entire hand of defensive cards. Glacier (7 Block + channel 2 Frost) is one of the best cards in the Defect's kit.
Unlike other characters who must actively play cards to deal damage and gain Block, the Defect's Orbs generate value automatically every turn. Once your Orb engine is set up, you can spend your Energy on playing power cards, drawing more cards, or channeling additional Orbs while your existing Orbs handle offense and defense. This passive generation means the Defect gets stronger over time without requiring specific cards in hand.
Once the Defect's Orb engine is running, it generates damage and Block automatically every turn without requiring card plays. Three Frost Orbs with 10 Focus produce 36 Block per turn passively. This means your actual card plays are pure bonus, creating overwhelming advantage in long fights.
Focus is a multiplicative stat — each point improves EVERY Orb's passive AND evoke effects. With 3 Orbs, each Focus point provides +3 passive value and +3 evoke value per turn. This makes Focus the most efficient scaling stat in the game, and Defragment the most impactful single card.
Glass Orbs (new in STS2) and Electrodynamics give the Defect the best multi-target damage in the game. Lightning evokes hitting all enemies trivializes hallway fights with 3-4 enemies. Combined with Frost Orbs for defense, the Defect handles multi-enemy encounters better than any other character.
Orb builds and Claw builds play completely differently, giving the Defect flexibility in deckbuilding. If Orb cards aren't appearing in rewards, you can pivot to Claw + All For One for a zero-cost rush strategy. This reduces the chance of getting stuck with a bad deck.
The Defect needs Focus and Orb Slots before his engine becomes powerful. In Act 1, before finding Defragment or Capacitor, you're dealing 3 passive Lightning damage per turn and generating 0 passive Block. Act 1 Elites can be particularly dangerous if your Orb setup isn't online yet.
Wrong evoke order can waste damage or defense. Channeling a Lightning Orb when you need Frost defense, or accidentally evoking a charging Dark Orb before it's ready, can cost you fights. The positional nature of Orb Slots adds a layer of complexity that other characters don't have.
At 75 HP with no innate healing, the Defect relies entirely on Frost Orbs and Block cards for survival. If Frost Orbs don't appear in early card rewards, the Defect can be dangerously vulnerable. Unlike the Ironclad (Burning Blood) or Necrobinder (Osty), the Defect has no built-in safety net.
Dark Orbs store 6+Focus damage each turn but only release it on evoke. This means Dark Orbs are worthless if you're forced to evoke them early, and they occupy an Orb Slot while contributing zero passive defense or damage until triggered. Timing Dark Orb evokes is one of the Defect's hardest skills.
Basic 6-damage attack. The Defect's Strikes are the least useful of any character because Orbs and Focus handle damage scaling instead.
Never. Strike upgrades are worth less than upgrading any Orb-related card.
Remove at every opportunity. Strikes don't contribute to Orb or Claw strategies.
Basic 5-Block skill. Necessary early but quickly outclassed by Frost Orbs which provide Block every turn without needing to draw or play cards.
Very Low. Defend+ is fine but Glacier or Defragment upgrades are far more impactful.
Replace with Glacier, Chill, or any card that channels Frost Orbs. Frost Orbs are better than Defend in every way.
Channel 1 Lightning Orb for 1 Energy. Your early-game damage source. Also useful for filling Orb slots to trigger evokes.
Medium. Zap+ costs 0 Energy, which is a massive improvement — free Orb channeling enables more plays per turn.
Keep until you have abundant Orb channeling from other sources. Zap+ at 0 cost is worth keeping long-term.
Evoke your rightmost Orb twice. Powerful finisher when you have a Dark Orb that's been charging, or for emergency Frost Block.
Low-Medium. Dualcast+ costs 0 Energy, similar to Zap+. Good but not as impactful as Focus cards.
Keep in most builds. Double-evoking Orbs is always useful. Replace only if your build has abundant evoke effects from other sources.

Gain 1-2 Focus permanently. The single most important card for any Orb build. Multiple copies stack. Always pick, always upgrade.

Play the first card each turn twice. Doubles your first Orb channel, your first attack, your first power. Game-warping when set up.

Gain 7 Block and channel 2 Frost Orbs. Block + persistent defense. The best common card in the Defect's kit.

Lightning Orb evokes and passives hit ALL enemies. Turns Lightning Orbs into devastating AoE. Channels 2 Lightning on play.

Gain 4 Focus but lose 1 Focus at the end of each turn. +4 Focus immediately is absurd. Combine with Artifact to prevent the downside.

Gain 2-3 Orb Slots. More slots = more passive effects per turn. Essential for Orb-heavy builds.

Channel 1 Frost, draw 1 card. Cheap defense + cycle. One of the Defect's best commons.

Deal 7 damage, channel 1 Lightning. Damage + Orb in one card. Efficient early-game offensive option.

Deal 6 damage, channel 1 Frost. Similar to Ball Lightning but defensive. Great versatility.
Gain 2 Focus, lose 1 Orb Slot. Excellent trade when you have Capacitor or don't need many slots.

Deal 10 damage, return all 0-cost cards from discard to hand. The Claw archetype's win condition.

At the start of each turn, add a random Power card to your hand. Infinite value generation for longer fights.

0-cost, gains +2 damage permanently each time any Claw is played. Only worth taking if you're committing to the Claw archetype.

Channel X Lightning Orbs where X = current Energy. Incredible with Energy generation but useless at low Energy.

Evoke rightmost Orb X times. Devastating with Dark or Lightning but expensive at 3+ Energy.

Channel 1 Dark Orb. Dark Orbs charge up damage over turns — patient players love them. Require setup time.

Gain Block equal to its current value, then increase permanently. Starts weak but becomes incredible in long runs.
Search your draw pile for 1-2 cards and put them in your hand. Tutoring is powerful but the Exhaust can be a downside.

Deal 3 damage, apply Vulnerable. Too low damage. The Defect has better ways to scale than Vulnerable.
Gain 6 Block, decreases by 1 each play. Actively gets worse. Frost Orbs scale up instead.

Gain 2 Energy, add Void (lose 1 Energy next turn) to discard. Net zero Energy with a delayed penalty.
Lose 1-2 Focus, gain 1-2 Strength and Dexterity. Focus is more valuable than Strength and Dexterity for the Defect.
Gain 1 Orb slot every 2 turns.
Gain 1 Orb Slot every 2 turns. Passive Orb Slot generation that compounds in long fights, giving more passive triggers each turn.
Your rightmost Orb triggers its passive an additional time.
Rightmost Orb triggers its passive effect an additional time. Doubles the value of your strongest positioned Orb every turn.
At the start of each combat, Channel 1 Dark.
Start each combat with a Dark Orb channeled. Dark Orbs charge up damage — starting with one means more stored damage for evoke.
If you end your turn with empty Orb Slots, channel 1 Frost. Passive Frost generation fills defensive gaps automatically.
If you lost HP during the previous turn, trigger the passive ability of all Orbs at the start of your turn.
If you take damage during your turn, trigger the passive effects of all Orbs. Emergency defensive/offensive trigger that synergizes with Frost.
Start each combat with 1 Focus.
Start every combat with 1 Focus. Free permanent Focus is the Defect's most valuable stat. Simple and always useful.
At Ascension 1+, Defragment becomes your highest priority Act 1 pickup. Even 1 Focus per turn adds up to massive value over a 10+ turn fight. Take Defragment over almost any other card offered.
Ascension 5+ makes Elite fights harder. The Defect should avoid Elites until you have at least Defragment + a Frost source. Without defensive Orbs, Elite damage spikes can end your run.
At Ascension 10+, Biased Cognition becomes more important. +4 Focus immediately can stabilize a fight that would otherwise overwhelm you. Look for Artifact potions or Clockwork Souvenir to remove the Focus-loss downside.
Ascension 15+ means fights last longer. Frost Orbs scale better in long fights than Lightning Orbs because Block compounds with Focus. Prioritize Frost-heavy builds over Lightning rush strategies.
For Ascension 18+, Echo Form is the strongest card in the Defect's kit. Doubling your first card each turn — whether it's a Defragment, a Glacier, or a Tempest — provides overwhelming advantage in the hardest fights.
At the highest Ascensions, Genetic Algorithm becomes a dark horse pick. It starts weak but permanently increases every time you play it. In a run with multiple rest sites and long fights, it can reach 30+ Block per play.
Channel Lightning orbs and boost them with Focus for devastating passive damage each turn. Electrodynamics turns every Lightning evoke into AoE. Echo Form doubles your best play each turn for exponential scaling.
Lightning Orbs passively deal damage equal to 3+Focus to a random enemy each turn. When evoked, they deal 8+Focus damage to a random enemy. The strategy is to fill your Orb slots with Lightning, stack Focus through Defragment, and let passive damage overwhelm enemies. Electrodynamics makes ALL Lightning damage hit ALL enemies, solving AoE. Echo Form duplicates your strongest card each turn.
ABecome an impenetrable wall of Frost orbs. Generate massive Block passively each turn while your orbs chip away at enemies. The ultimate 'I can do this all day' defensive strategy for the Defect.
Frost Orbs generate Block equal to 2+Focus passively each turn. With high Focus and multiple Frost orb slots, you passively gain 30-50+ Block per turn without playing a single card. Glacier channels 2 Frost orbs at once, Coolheaded cycles your deck while channeling Frost, and Defragment makes every orb produce more Block. Once set up, you're nearly invincible.
SThe fan-favorite zero-cost spam deck that cycles through cheap attacks at blazing speed, with Claw's damage permanently ramping every time it's played. All for One retrieves all 0-cost cards from the discard pile for massive combo turns, while Feral doubles up 0-cost card plays. When the machine gets going, nothing can stop the Claw.
Claw is a 0-Energy attack that permanently increases the damage of ALL future Claws by 2 each time any Claw is played. With multiple copies and ways to replay them (All for One, Hologram), Claw damage snowballs rapidly — by the 5th play, each Claw deals 18+ damage for free. The deck fills itself with 0-cost cards (Claw, FTL, Go for the Eyes, Momentum Strike, Flash of Steel) and uses Scrape to cycle through them while All for One pulls them all back from the discard pile for another round. Feral acts as an Echo Form for 0-cost cards, doubling each play.
AChannel Dark orbs that passively grow in damage every turn, then evoke them for devastating single-target nukes. While Lightning chips and Frost blocks, Dark orbs accumulate for one apocalyptic strike. The patient player's ultimate win condition.
Dark orbs passively gain damage equal to 6+Focus each turn. When evoked, they deal ALL accumulated damage to the enemy with the lowest HP. With Focus from Defragment, each Dark orb gains 8-10+ damage per turn. After 4-5 turns, a single Dark orb holds 40-50 damage. Multi-Cast evokes it multiple times for 120-150+ burst damage. Consuming Shadow channels Dark + deals immediate damage. The strategy is: survive while Dark orbs charge, then unleash everything at once.
ALet an AI generate your deck for you. Creative AI adds a random Power to your hand each turn, creating an ever-expanding engine of passive effects. Combined with Storm (channel Lightning per Power played) and Echo Form, the build snowballs into an unstoppable cascade of orbs, buffs, and passive damage.
Creative AI is a 3-cost Power that generates a random Defect Power card at the start of each turn. Defect has some of the best Powers in the game: Defragment, Electrodynamics, Echo Form, Loop, Machine Learning, and more. Storm channels a Lightning orb every time you play a Power, so each generated Power also creates an orb. Echo Form doubles the first card each turn — including the free Power from Creative AI. The build starts slow but becomes an avalanche of accumulated Powers and orbs within 5-6 turns.

The Frost/Lightning Focus build is the most consistent. Stack Focus through Defragment and Biased Cognition, fill Orb Slots with Frost for defense and Lightning for offense, and use Capacitor for more slots. With 10+ Focus and 5+ Orb Slots, you generate 50+ Block and deal 30+ damage passively every turn.
As the community joke goes: 'How many Claws do you need? The answer is yes.' Realistically, you want 3-4 Claw cards plus All For One to recur them from your discard pile. Each Claw played increases all Claw damage by 2 permanently, so by the third cycle through your deck, each Claw deals 12+ damage at 0 Energy cost.
In most builds, Frost Orbs should be your priority. Surviving is more important than dealing damage, and Frost Orbs with high Focus generate enormous Block every turn. Lightning Orbs are your secondary offensive tool. The ideal setup is 2-3 Frost Orbs for defense and 1-2 Lightning Orbs for damage, all amplified by high Focus.
Glass Orbs are new to Slay the Spire 2. Passive: deal 2+Focus damage to ALL enemies each turn. Evoke: deal 5+Focus damage to ALL enemies. They're the Defect's AoE Orb type, perfect for multi-enemy encounters. With high Focus and Electrodynamics, Glass + Lightning Orbs create devastating AoE every turn.
Yes, but it's less consistent than Orb Focus builds. Claw requires finding multiple Claw copies and All For One, which is more RNG-dependent. When it works, Claw snowballs incredibly fast — but when you don't find the pieces, your deck lacks the scaling to handle Act 3 fights. Orb Focus is the safer pick for Ascension climbing.
The Defect in Slay the Spire 2 has the same core Orb mechanic but adds Glass Orbs for AoE, new Focus interactions, and updated power card synergies. Claw still works. Echo Form is still incredible. The main improvement is better AoE handling through Glass Orbs, which was a notable weakness in StS1.
Your Cracked Core starts you with a Lightning Orb. Use Zap to channel more Lightning early. Prioritize finding Defragment in Act 1 — it's the most important single card for the Defect. Pick up Glacier or Coolheaded for Frost defense. Don't overcommit to Claw unless you find 2+ copies early and have an All For One.
